Back pain affects nearly 80% of adults during their lives and neck pain about 50% - it is one of the most common reasons for lost work days and a major cause of disability.

The spine is an amazing part of your body. It provides strength, support, protection, and movement. Because your spine is subject to stress and strain every day, it is a frequent site of injury and problems that result from normal wear and tear.

Some people put more wear and tear on their spine than others, such as athletes and people who work at jobs that are physically demanding. But even working at a desk job can put added strain on your spine. Rarely is it just one structure that's involved but rather a combination of joints, ligaments, discs, nerves or other soft tissues. While tension can contribute, repetitive activities and postures are most often at fault. Prolonged sitting or standing in the same position is often associated with back pain. Traumatic injuries like whiplash or from contact sports and lifting injuries can also cause back pain.

Physiotherapists are therefore skilled in helping with back pain. Expect an examination to include questions about your condition and general health; watching your movements and then feeling how your back moves. Treatment may involve moving your back joints with mobilisations or manipulation; soft tissue massage, acupuncture and advice on how to modify your habits to aid your recovery as well as a home exercise programme.

Headaches are a common ailment and some are caused and aggravated by neck and upper back problems. The upper neck has nerves that link in to the head and any tight or stiff muscles may cause or contribute towards headaches. Poor posture or trauma (such as Whiplash ) can also be a cause of headaches and is associated with neck pain.

Typically the methods of treatment employed are:

  • Joint mobilisations - Stiff or unstable upper neck and jaw joints are common causes of headaches.
  • Core neck muscle re-training - Studies have demonstrated that a significant number of cervical headache sufferers also have weakness in the deep stabilizing muscles of the neck and trunk.
  • Massage/soft tissue mobilisation - The release of tension or trigger points in muscles is very successful in treating cervical headaches.
  • Acupuncture
  • Correction of muscle imbalances
  • Posture advice and correction exercises
  • Ergonomic Assessment & Correction - The use of a poor chair, desk or badly placed computer may result in poor posture which places strain on the neck. The physiotherapist can advise on office set-up, bed and pillows.

We know how important your sport is to you and our objective is to get you back to what you enjoy doing as quickly as possible.

Early diagnosis and treatment of any sporting injury is crucial - but we do not just treat the symptoms. At your initial consultation we will carry out a full bio-mechanical assessment, looking at pelvic position, leg length etc, to identify the cause of the problem and we will advise how to prevent further injuries occurring.
We work closely with a number of consultant surgeons and other specialist practitioners should we feel the nature of any injury falls beyond the scope of physiotherapy.

Some of the more common sports injuries we treat are:

  •  Shoulder Tendonitis
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Knee ligament injuries
  • Shin splints
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Muscle Strains
  • Bursitis

Acupuncture is a form of ancient Chinese medicine in which fine needles are inserted into the skin at certain points on the body.

Acupuncture is the stimulation of special points on the body, usually by the insertion of fine needles. Originating in the Far East about 2000 years ago, it has made various appearances in the history of European and north American medicine.

In its original form acupuncture was based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. According to these, the workings of the human body are controlled by a vital force or energy called "Qi" (pronounced "chee"), which circulates between the organs along channels called meridians. There are 12 main meridians, and these correspond to 12 major functions or "organs" of the body.

Acupuncture is one of the many skills used within physiotherapy as an integrated approach to the management of pain, inflammation and as a means of enhancing the body's own healing chemicals in order to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation. Acupuncture within physiotherapy is used within the background of clinical and research evidence.

Treatment with Acupuncture is undertaken with the aim or restoring all the body systems to a state of balance (homeostasis). This is achieved by an in depth physiotherapy assessment to determine the source of the imbalance and the correct acupuncture points required to address this imbalance and facilitate the body's return to a state of health both physically and mentally.

Acupuncture can be used as part of your physiotherapy treatment, and can usually compliment your 'hands on' treatment session.

Deep massage therapy is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is applicable not just to sports people but to anybody wishing to guard against or recover from a soft tissue injury. At BounceBack Physio we offer this treatment wishing all out physiotherapy treatment, so that your session can be tailored to address your needs appropriately.

Deep Tissue massage is a technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas. It helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue. Deep Tissue massage usually focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage, but the patient will feel better than ever within a day or two.

Pilates is an exercise system that focuses on stretching and strengthening the whole body to improve balance, muscle-strength, flexibility and posture. It was created by German-born Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s and incorporates elements of yoga, martial arts and Western forms of exercise.

Initially adopted by professional dancers in the US as an effective form of recovery after injury, Pilates has steadily grown in popularity around the world, and includes celebrity fans such as Harry Styles, David Beckham, Madonna and Jennifer Aniston. So why not give it a go and call us to see Emily Bower Fitness And Pilates for either a 1-2-1 session or join a group class.
